100 years were commemorated in a true Tacoma way, complete with a little rain. The Centennial Celebration honored not only all the games, civic pride and student activities going back to 1910, but the stadium as engineering marvel and moments recognizing the men and women of the armed forces and a moment of silence for those who did not make it home.

It was truly a "Trip Through Time" as Presidents Teddy Roosevelt, Warren G Harding and Woodrow Wilson all arrived via presidential motorcade and gave their exact same speeches. Woodrow even brought Edith (First Lady 1912-1920) with a very fashionable stole and hat.

Most of all, there were marching bands, kids doing exuberant and exciting gymnastics and cheers and lots of pride of place. Tacoma, the heart of the Puget Sound, what with all the industry, the history of working men and women and where Tacoma convened for at least 60 years was the Stadium. The story of a people is in its commons, in its shared experiences and as a common ground, the Stadium of our school represents it: Everyone from Presidents to custodians, to students, teachers and their families, shared in this; history grew out of this field. Men and women were forged here and went on into their lives and history.

The Stadium Centennial Foundation program included many historic photos of the Stadium, events and people and a few free offers from local merchants.

There was a most distinguished group of honorees on the stage, but the best view, was of course from the stands. Let's all give thanks to the hundreds of attendees and to the Stadium Centennial Foundation for not only preserving but promoting our local roots and heritage.

Fill the Bowl food drive in Tacoma hits record

It was down to the wire, but Stadium Bowl bested the previous Guinness World Record for the largest 24-hour food drive Saturday, collecting 515,067 pounds of food that filled 15 tractor-trailers.

Party in the Bowl

The News Tribune for Sept. 14th, has an article by Peter Callaghan.

The story relates what a community can do when motivated.

..."At first the school board balked, deciding to level the floor of the gulch as simple play fields instead.

Only after school kids and business leaders took up the issue and began raising the money did the board give in.

Workers used water jets, steam shovels, horse-drawn carts and men with broad backs to move 180,000 cubic yards of earth to form the floor and the sides."

After celebrating our big win over Bellarmine on Friday night and watching two great movies in the bowl, wake up Saturday morning and head on down for a great pancake breakfast at the school from 8 to 11am and then meet up in a classroom reserved for your decade between 11 and 1....tour the school again and check out all the great memorabilia in all the display cases...see if you can find some from your year.

What does the Stadium Bowl mean to you?

Tacoma High School was renamed Stadium High School in honor of this Icon so it does mean something to the students who went there. But this incredible landmark means much more to the City of Tacoma and the State of Washington.
Theodore Roosevelt remarked:

“I know nothing like it, nothing on this side of the water, and nothing abroad. While I had heard of your Stadium, I had no idea of what an extraordinary feature of your municipal life it is.”

Even the president of the United States knew how important this remarkable Stadium was to our community.

The Stadium Bowl has been a part of history not only for Tacoma and the State of Washington, but for many other parts of the country. It has been the scene of innumerable sports and community events. The University of Southern California played its first football game outside the state of California in the Stadium bowl. Oregon State, Texas A & M, Penn State, Gonzaga, PLU, UPS are among the numerous football teams that have played in the bowl. Several presidents have spoken there. John Philip Sousa performed in the bowl. Babe Ruth played an exhibition game there. And list goes on and on.

There have been so many historical events that have happened in the bowl that we felt it only right to honor this icon. It is our hope that you will come help us celebrate the 100th birthday while we try to break another Guinness World record. The two day celebration will include a dedication program much like the ones they held so long ago called “Stadium Days” with students, military, bands and choirs as well as some re-enactments of things that have happened in our bowl. You won't want to miss it! Won’t you please join us and make this incredible historical event one that you will remember for years to come.

One of the numbers that many people are interested in is whether we surpassed
the greatest number attending a reunion.

The signatures still need to be compared to school records and duplicates eliminated,
but over 4,000 alums signed in for Guinness record.
The old record was 2,521 set in Guben, Germany in 2002;

Here are a few more numbers:

A large number of emails have been received expressing, sometimes, quite emotional reactions to the three day event.

The following, I think, expresses the experience very well:

To know this was a huge success all you had to do was:

sit in the Courtyard for 5 minutes and watch faces from young to old, grinning the same way, and remembering walking down the same halls from age 15 to 18; or

listen to conversations, hearing old friends greeting each other with war stories, or elders telling their children and grandchildren what they remembered, or young parents showing their small children where they would be going to school; or

watch a former music teacher greet an old student with hugs, a few tears, more hugs and almost no words; or

see the faces of the four SHS band members playing with Blood, Sweat and Tears, (I didn't know you could smile and play at the same time) and their parents and friends dancing in the aisles; or

greet your parent's friends, your friends, your children's friends, and lots of relatives and people you know from the community, knowing they all have this one thing in common; or

watch incredible fireworks, thinking this is bigger than the 4th of July, and it's at a HIGH SCHOOL!! or

see people from the community who have nothing to do with the school, but just wanted to be there;

note that people, old and young were back more than once (I saw the octogenarian who slept in the Library on Saturday eating an ice cream cone on the turf in the Bowl on Sunday);

watch the crowd (3 and 4 deep) at the store waiting for their turn at the sweatshirts and hats;

try to wipe the smile off your face. From one who came way late to the party, you guys did an absolutely amazing job!

Your sentiments made me cry…I agree with everything you said so eloquently…It was a truly amazing experience for both Milt and me. I saw classmates and friends I haven’t seen in over 50 years. I had a tremendous sense of pride, both for having gone to this amazing school and for the job Pati, Dick and the committee did in making sure everyone had a glorious weekend. I am now a believer that if you wish hard enough, your dreams will come true…even the weather will cooperate! When Pat O’Day said he saw a rainbow right before the concert began I cried again. As I sat for awhile in the new theatre, I took a few moments to reflect on our journey and all I can say is WOW! I am so proud to have been a part of this once-in-a-lifetime endeavor. The memories you all helped create for thousands of people will be remembered forever.

My personal thanks go to three sponsors with whom I dealt directly. Two Busy to Cook who provided food for most of the committee meetings, Foss Maritime who provided the barge and tug for the superiffic fireworks and Star Rental who provided two generators so our bowl activities had power. You are angels indeed!

Thanks to all of you on the committee. What an incredible event! And a special thank you to the hundreds of volunteers who showed up to help us all make it happen. Some of you are alums, some are parents, some are students and some are neighbors who just wanted to help make it happen. You traveled from as far away as New York, Virginia and California to attend the event and took time away from your visit to help us out. It would have never happened without you. And to those of you who stayed around to see what more was needed and barely went home (you know who you are) we will never forget you. THANKS!!!

The Tiger Gods smiled down on us and kept the rain away. But thinking about it, we didn't need the natural sunshine because our Alumni, students, families, friends, community supporters and guests had a perpetual radiance glowing all weekend long. After the school managed to get the visitors out Sunday afternoon, there were still people at the doors reminiscent of the Mervyn's TV ads - "Open, open, open". That elderly alum who fell asleep in the library on Saturday, I met he and his wife at the Courtyard Party and greeted them every day. As I was leaving late Friday afternoon, I saw them getting off the last visitor shuttle from the Bowl!

What diehards! I know of alums who came from London and Costa Rica. At the Pancake breakfast, I met a man and his wife from Mercer Island. He was a 1945 graduate. They attended on Saturday. On Sunday morning, his wife asked him what he wanted to do and he said "Let's go to the Pancake Breakfast".

Friday, I handed out pom poms to the crowd as they entered the Bowl, greeting friends, classmates, neighbors, family and my new Tiger buddies from our committee. Even if we had never set eyes on each other before, there were no strangers.

Thanks to Pati and Anita and Dick, our Committee, volunteers, the Boosters, our Alums, Staff and students.
I want to send a special thank you to Commander Mandigo and his ROTC students for their participation. They were everywhere!

We all love the unique building, location and history of Stadium High School. And certainly, those things have helped shape us but it's also our classmates, teachers and staff and parents that made Stadium what it was and is.

As we were planning this event, there were times of doubt of ever getting this off the ground. I feel honored and privileged to have been a member of the Celebration Committee.

On to the next 100 years!

Stadium High School did not open in 1906!

There was no Bowl!

After spending $480,000 in 1891 currency, the building of a new hotel was halted.

The building stood vacant until a fire in 1898 left it a pile of bricks and steel.

After standing as a hulk visited by kids in obvious violation of yet to be passed safety laws, Savage & Scofield was let the contract to rip the building down. The materials were to be used to build railroad stations.

They tried to give the building to the University of Puget Sound, but the gift was refused.

Charles Drury, Conrad Hoska, Alfred Lister, and Alfred Lister suggested that it be made into a new high school.

The land was purchased for $34,000 and reconstruction began.

It cost $300,788.18 to rebuild and equip the building.

First classes were held in 1906.

This was the opening of Tacoma High School.

The architect, Fredrich Heath, was looking at "Old Woman's Gulch" next to the school and thought it would make a great stadium. While climbing through the gulch, Heath discovered a body of a man hanging from a tree. People decided it was time to clear out the area.

There were several small shacks in the gulch. Some of the residents refused to leave until their homes were sliced down the hill or were buried.

In 1910, the Stadium bowl was finished.

The school was not renamed until Lincoln High School was built in 1913.
Tacoma High School then became Stadium High School.

A plaque was installed at the North stairway of the Stadium, commemorating the event.

In 1914 after the school board criticized the antics of the hooligans of the day (they did a snake dance in the bowl!) and stopped inter-city football games, the tablet was stolen.

This information came from Herbert Hunt's History of Tacoma.

Landscape marred by Fire

Despite the economic problems of the time, there were some high points.

After that things started to get hot:

September 18, 1898

Tacoma's Western Washington Industrial Exposition building burns to the ground. The building, built in early 1891, was the largest frame building on the West Coast. The mammoth structure covered two blocks around Tacoma Avenue and N 8th Street.

Loss on building $20,000. Loss on Tacoma Avenue bridge $2,000. No insurance.

October 11th, at 7:15 p.m.

Alarm was sounded from box 39 for a fire in the Tourist Hotel, on E street extending from North First to North Second.

Attention all Stadium Band Alumni! What would the Centennial Celebration be without the band?

All band alumni are invited to march in the pre-homecoming game parade on Friday afternoon, and join the current pep band for some mass music making during the game.

Please come and march even if you no longer play your instrument, but if possible bring your instrument so you can play!

We will announce the details, including what music you will be playing and how to get copies, in August.

The Tiger Trail will pave a walkway in the newly renovated Stadium High School. Each tile can be inscribed with up to three lines of text.

Spends a quiet night

After six miles of marching, coaxing, and bribery with bottles of water, the tiger is home.

The tiger looks down Stadium way from the performing arts galleria in the new building across from the Castle.

The sculpture was a gift from the classes of 2002 and 2003. It was created by Oliver Strong, formerly from Sequim.

The end of our two year mission nears. The much needed renovation of the Brown Castle is almost completed.

The task, now, is to take the Stadium High School Tiger back home.

Stadium Tiger Pride and School Spirit rests in the hands of the student body, teachers, staff, parents, alumni and supporters.

Join us as the bronze Tiger leads the 6 mile walk from our temporary campus at Mt. Tahoma (6229 S Tyler St.) to the Castle at Stadium Bowl.

The Tiger Walks

Going Home

The classes of 2002 and 2003 combined to commision a bronze Tiger.

The proud animal is 2 feet wide, 4 feet high, and 8 feet long.

Our friend has been resting at its temporary location at Mt. Tahoma while its rightful home was being refurbished.

On June 4, the Tiger will be walked down Tyler to Stevens and on to 6th Avenue, then over to Division and home in plenty of time for the September Celebration.

A Moment of Freedom

Do you remember that instant of freedom and fear when high school graduation was finally accomplished?

For most of us this was that one moment of autonomy. No immediate school or job demands. No great family obligations.

The next grand independence probably doesn't come until retirement.

I bring this up because we have a group of Stadium graduates who are under represented on the distribution list.

The years 2004 and 2005 have, of course, not had a reunion yet. They are probably out savoring their release from oppression by the system.

Record setting

There are just about four and a half months until the festivities on September 15, 16 and 17.

We will be attempting to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest number of graduates attending a school reunion. Stadium bowl will hold between 14,000 and 17,000 people. The record will require about 3 to 4,000 tigers.

We are planning to attempt to duplicate this 180 degree photo that was taken by M. D. Boland.

We now have two graduates from that class who are intending to attend the September Celebration.

Do you know who's the oldest?

Mary Rothwell will be attending our event in September. She will be 98. She was born on June 28, 1908.

Mary also attended Washington and Lowell. Her Dad owned a business college in downtown Tacoma.

Mary attended the University of Hawaii and UW and received a degree in social work. She worked as a social worker in Hawaii and Seattle.

In case you're looking in your yearbook, her former name was Beutel.

Do you know of any older graduates?

There will be a special reception for "Golden Grads" on Saturday, the 16th.
This will be for all graduates from at least 50 years ago.

Construction stops

Hotel is put on hold

Construction continued, on what was to become Stadium High School, throughout 1892. In 1893 there was a depression and construction was halted.

Other events occurred during these years:

In 1893, Tacoma's Old City Hall is constructed at S 7th Street and Pacific Avenue. The Italian Renaissance style building is designed by E. A. Hatherton of San Francisco and features pressed brickwork, terra cotta ornamentation, and a copper tiled roof. The stately, ornate building with its arched and bracketed clock tower reflects the civic pride and promise of Tacoma immediately before the nationwide economic crash in the spring of 1893.

The brick walls at the base of the structure are eight feet thick and were made with bricks brought as ballast on ships. The clock tower is freestanding and its walls tilt inward as they rise, to increase the sense of height. Hugh C. Wallace, future United States ambassador to France, donated the clock and chimes in 1905 in memory of his daughter.

TV Tacoma production

"First of all, on behalf of John Miller and TV Tacoma (TVT), I want to thank you for the opportunity for us to join the construction tours of Stadium High School last Saturday, January 7th. It is a most impressive project, and we very much appreciated the opportunity to see the progress firsthand and for John to be able to get footage of the work underway, for use in the upcoming TV Tacoma production on the SHS centennial. I am working with John to gather and distill those one hundred years of school history into 30 minutes, a daunting but fascinating process!

As I mentioned to you the morning of the tour, we would like to discuss with you the idea of making a broader appeal to the community, by way of the News-Tribune, for the loan of SHS memorabilia and ephemera (photos - particularly of the last 30-50 years - home movies, programs, recordings, etc.) so that they might be copied/scanned and used in the production.

Prior to working at PLU, I was the historian for Metro Parks Tacoma (MPT) and the Point Defiance Park centennial documentary co-produced with TV Tacoma; such a News-Tribune column by Kathleen Merryman resulted in the loan of some wonderful historical material that we would otherwise not have found and that we were able to incorporate into the production."

Behind the barricades

The News Tribune printed a front page article on what is going on with the $105 million "rehab" of the Castle.

The article by C.R. Roberts includes Russ Carmack's pictures of some of the work that has been done.

The building will have 2 elevators to help modern youth navigate the eight floors.

New Hotel Built

The building was originally intended by its financiers, the Northern Pacific Railroad Company and Tacoma Land Company, to be one of the finest luxury hotels on the Pacific Coast.

In 1890 they purchased a nine-acre tract of land on a high bluff overlooking Commencement Bay, and solicited architectural designs and bids for the building.

The winning architects, Hewitt and Hewitt of Philadelphia, submitted with their bid a painting of their planned edifice in French Renaissance architectural style. (That painting hangs today in Stadium's main office.)

Some sources have claimed that the building is modeled after an actual chateau near Tours (southwest of Paris) or Chaumont (southeast of Paris), but neither claim has been verified.

Construction of the hotel--known both as the Olympic and the Tourist--began in 1891, but came to a screeching halt in 1893 in the wake of a nationwide financial panic and depression.
